The Chinese High-Speed Maglev Train Could Be Faster Than Air Travel

Moreover, a recent news about China's magnetic levitation technology has received worldwide attention. On May 23, 2019, a high-speed maglev train test sample with a speed of 600 kilometers per hour in Qingdao, China, was released in an exhibition, which marks a major breakthrough in the field of high-speed magnetic levitation technology in China.

China's magnetic levitation railway project was launched in July 2016. It was organized by China CRRC. These project gathered various resources in the field of magnetic levitation in China and was jointly developed by more than 30 enterprises, universities and research institutes.

As an emerging high-speed vehicle, high-speed maglev train has the advantages of high speed, safety and reliability, low noise, low vibration, and large passenger capacity. In addition, what the public most concerned about is the safety issue. Because the high-speed maglev train operates in a "holding track" mode, the train has no risk of derailment. What’s more, the high-speed maglev trian has the technical advantage of “quick start and stop”, and can also be applied to medium-and-short-distance passenger transport.

At present, China's high-speed rail has a maximum operating speed of 350Km/h, aircraft cruising speed is 800~900km/h, and maglev train’s speed is as high as 600Km/h, which can fill the gap between high-speed rail and air transportation.

According to Sansan Ding, the chief technical expert of China CRRC, “taking Beijing to Shanghai as an example, adding the preparation time to the journey, it takes about 4.5 hours to fly by plane, 5.5 hours by high-speed rail, and only about 3.5 hours by high-speed maglev train.” In this situation, the high-speed maglev train could be faster than air travel.

China CRRC Group is currently constructing a high-speed maglev train experimental center, which is expected to be put into use later in 2019. At the same time, five high-speed maglev prototypes with a speed of 600 kilometers per hour will be put into development. According to the plan, the 600km high-speed maglev trains will be put into use in China in 2020.

It can be seen that China's research on magnetic levitation technology is expected to make higher-speed maglev trains to help people with travelling and commuting, and in this way to reduce the travel time between cities, and to provide new and faster choice for commuting. However, it will still need more time for the technology to develop. whether it can be put into use, there are many factors to consider, such as the balance of cost and benefit, so the future of the maglev trains will take time to see.
