AI in Detecting Depression in a Child's Speech

Artificial Intelligence is applicable in almost every aspect of life in this century, including the medical world. One of the areas in health where medics are using Ai is in detecting mental illnesses like depression, especially in children.

This is necessary for children since some of these psychiatric conditions are challenging to diagnose at an early age. Ai has therefore made it easy for adults to identify unhealthy patterns in the behavior of children since young people may at most times, be unable to articulate their emotions.

This is necessary for children since some of these psychiatric conditions are challenging to diagnose at an early age. Ai has therefore made it easy for adults to identify unhealthy patterns in the behavior of children since young people may at most times, be unable to articulate their emotions.

A way through which psychologists are using Ai to detect depression is through a machine learning (ML) algorithm that allows people to recognize signs of mental illnesses in children through an analysis of speech patterns. From the algorithm, certain forms of speech indicated that a child was likely to be in a depriving mental state. Children’s audios are recorded after they are put into a stressing environment, then their vocal reactions are recorded and evaluated.

The three types of speeches that act as red flags when a child goes through the process are a very high pitched response, a low one, or constant stammering. If the reaction of the children is one of the three, it is clear that there are chances a child might be suffering from depression.

Ai is vital for this course since it allows parents to diagnose their children’s mental illnesses at a young age and treat them while their minds are still developing. Children's minds are much easier to work with than adolescents so being able to start counsel and care for a child in need earlier is consequential. The earlier the diagnosis, the more positive the potential outcomes will be.

This is significant as early diagnosis ensures that the adverse effects of mental illnesses like suicide are hopefully avoided. The algorithm is fast unlike traditional ways of telling the mental state of parents like the observation of behavior and use of questionnaires. Therefore, Ai is proving to be an essential tool in the medical world.
