Cruising Past the Titanic: The Symphony of the Seas Is Officially The Biggest Cruise Ship in the World

The Symphony of the Seas is officially the largest cruise ship in the world after three years of construction, with a weight of 228,081 tons, a length of 1,188 ft. and a width of 215 ft., 5in. Now that is titanic. Over the past century, cruise ships have evolved significantly from 20th-century vessels, which were smaller, lighter, and nowhere as fun as the ones today.

The Symphony of the Seas Boasts a Tremendous Water Park

Let's take the Titanic as an example. Before the Titanic sunk in 1912, it weighed 52,310 tons and measured 882 ft., 9in. long with a width of 92 ft., 6 in., making it only three quarters as long and about half as wide as The Symphony of the Seas. When it comes to cost, the Titanic would have cost roughly $174 million after adjusting for inflation. While the Symphony of the Seas is only about twice as big, it cost five times as much to build with a price tag of nearly $1.35 billion.

The ship boasts a miniature Central Park

After making this comparison, one might wonder why the world needs such an expensive and massive cruise ships. Here's why: you can play laser tag in a space-themed park, there's a boardwalk with food vendors and candy, 20 restaurants, a giant sports bar and arcade with over 30 screens, a FlowRIder surf simulator, multiple waterparks, a world-class casino, and obviously a wild night life with nightclubs, disco, and themed parties.

However, even these luxurious amenities make it difficult to justify a whopping $1.35 billion price tag.
