Tesla Sacrifices Safety for Volume
Tesla recently hit its 5,000-a-week Model 3 production goal for Model S Cars. This milestone draws attention to an alarming production process.
Elon Musk is notorious for boasting higher car production rates than he can deliver on. As recently as last July, he claimed Tesla would create 500,000 cars in 2018, and, by forgoing safety, Tesla barely made the deadline of creating 5,000 Model 3 sedans in one week. Musk ordered several production shutdowns this past Spring to retool the production process, which he admitted was due to complications with the machinery.
In order to meet the increasing consumer demand, Tesla engineers were allegedly ordered to take a critical brake test off the checklist for Model 3 cars. Musk reportedly instructed Tesla engineers to forgo a standard brake test, known as the “brake-and-roll test” before passing Model 3 vehicles through production in an attempt to speed up manufacturing. The process allegedly occurs during the final stages of production to test standard brake functions and to ensure correct wheel alignment.
Ron Harbour, a consultant at Oliver Wyman reports to Business Insider, “[when] you just abandon [the test], you could potentially have a lot of quality issues with your customers… [the test] is part of finishing the build of the car,” . Reports on 5,000 cars produced in a week demonstrates Musk’s willingness to sacrifice quality control of his product in order to meet a production goal.
