The Bahamas Suffer Catastrophic Losses From Hurricane Dorian
Whole neighborhoods have been wiped out in the Bahamas over the last 48 hours. The Bahamas won't be the same for many years to come. Unfortunately, many ignored the mandatory evacuation notices and the current death toll of 7 is expect to rise. The Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Hubert Minnis said "We can expect more deaths to be recorded. Our priority is search, rescue and recovery."
The bank UBS has put out a report with an expected cost of Hurricane Dorian to range between $5 & $40 billion. With much of the Bahamas still underwater, assessments of the losses are far from detailed. Authorities are encouraging anyone with a jet ski to help those marooned on roofs and trees.
The Walt Disney Company is coming under fire for not evacuating their island in the Caribbean, Castaway Cay and its 60 permanent employees. Many people did not expect the 150+ mph winds that Dorian unleashed.
The hurricane is now marching slowly towards northern Florida and the Carolinas as the US' southern east coast prepares for a direct hit. Hopefully, the hurricane will go out to sea before it hits Virginia. But, the seaside community of the Outer Banks in North Carolina might see some heavy losses.
