Amazon’s Ruff Day

Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Amazon Prime Day. All major consumer holidays. Amazon Prime Day is one of the most highly anticipated shopping bonanzas. Each year, for 36 hours, Amazon provides major discounts on items for its subscription service, known as Amazon Prime. In just a few years, this global event has cemented its spot as one of the world’s most important retail holidays.

Prime Day 2018 was projected to break records, surpassing even the “tens of millions” of Prime members who shopped the discounts last year. When Prime Day launched at 3 p.m. ET on Monday, in a matter of minutes, Amazon's website crashed, and unfortunate Prime members were unable to shop the deals. Outraged customers threatened to shop elsewhere as error pages exploded with the message “Sorry something went wrong on our end. Please go back and try again on Amazon’s home page” popped up across screens (pictured below).

Although Amazon’s Prime Day suffered from a rocky launch, stock prices have increased since the error was fixed, creating new records.
